Requirement

Citizen M’s success has been in creating environments that people actually want to be in. Far from a generic business hotel, style and flair have been splashed liberally all over the hotel. One of their mottos is “The better the room, the better the meeting” – which we love. The plants supplied had to co-ordinate carefully with all aspects of the hotel’s design.
The date for the opening of the hotel was an ultimate deadline with no chance to complete the work after this date had passed. Access to site was also a consideration, as is often the case in central London. The size of the plants had to allow for growth but still fill an otherwise empty and ‘cold’ space.

What We Did

Working in partnership with Dutch Architects Concrete Architecture on the project, as well as Bowmer and Kirkland as Main Contractors, we proposed a solution that was very well received. We’d watched the project unfold through all of the planning stages and we took the time to absorb as much information as possible about what was needed from us.

Our proposal consisted of “Betula Utilis Jaquemontii“ up to 6m high in an internal courtyard on the ground and first floors. The largest trees were hoisted into position by a crane, up and over the 5 storey building and were planted in bespoke planters with incorporated bench. Smaller trees were also included and were planted in illuminated planters – excellent for long summer evenings. An artificial green wall was also created to hide the bland escape staircase that overlooked the courtyard. The plants merged seamlessly into the overall design, and served to compliment the high standards achieved by the designers on the project.
When it came to installation, the process was completed on time with the plants looking in prime condition for the all-important launch of the hotel in May 2012.

Results

The hotel opened in May 2012 and have proved a massive success. The hotel now has further branches planned for elsewhere in the UK, and is well on its way to becoming an established brand nationwide. The atmosphere and style of the hotel was paramount to its success, and reviews online would suggest this has been achieved.

Benefits

Plants within commercial environments are known to influence an increase in consumer spend. They also reduce stress levels which is an important advantage for business clients. Within a hotel environment, plants add value to the overall experience enjoyed by the customer, and justifies a strong price point. Citizen M enjoys rave reviews and is distinct from many of its peers by offering a modern, streamlined and yet compelling experience for its guests. This has led to many repeat bookings and fuelled further growth of the business, despite the economic downturn.

FTSE100 company

This client is a FTSE100 company with a long history of excellence in its particular field of work. Having traded for many decades in the UK, it was time in 2014 for their head office to move to a smarter location. The new offices were to be more modern, allowing plenty of natural light and space to impact positively on the performance of the employees.

Requirement

This company needed plants for a variety of reasons throughout the various areas of the office. They were used as a border for the canteen, separating workstations and creating privacy for staff next to the main walking areas. The planters were required to be sourced with bespoke measurements to fit on top of the new office furniture. This would maximize the effectiveness of the space available, freeing up valuable floor space.

What We Did

The original plan from AECOM was incredibly ambitious, and when it came to installation – the client’s budget was being looked at in close detail. When these concerns became apparent to us, we were able to suggest cost effective solutions to ensure that the majority of the scheme went ahead as planned. This involved changing a few of the plant species, altering the displays to ensure better visibility and even how we worked.

Our genuine and flexible approach to working was well received by the client, so we were chosen to carry out the installation. The client had opted for a hydroculture system, as part of their commitment to the environment and reducing CO2 emissions. We decided that the most cost effective way to install was to make up the planters onsite, something we’d normally prepare in advance. However, with over 80 planters to install – we still managed to complete our work in just two days.

Results

The office has been significantly transformed from a bland area into a thriving populated workspace with lively looking plants, fully in line with the original designs from the architect. The plants are successful at keeping employees sheltered from the foot traffic of the office, as well as separating each team to provide some seclusion and reduce ambient noise. Furthermore the plants are growing healthily and providing lots of fresh air for the staff, making a happy and healthy workforce. The fresh flowers on display at reception are changed weekly, and continue to impress both visitors and staff.

Benefits

By choosing the solution we provided, our client has enjoyed a complete service. Instead of having a potentially disjointed experience, with one set of contractors installing and another team maintaining – we’ve been able to have a thorough and consistent positive impact on the project from start to finish. As we are now maintaining the plants, we can stay true to the architect’s vision throughout the life-cycle of the plants. Our personal service has built a high level of trust with the client and our ability to respond quickly to their changing requirements was well received. The final project was finished on time and within budget, with the plants making a massive difference to the overall ‘feel’ of the offices. The bespoke planters we sourced matched perfectly with the office furniture already sourced, and allowed the client to enjoy a high number of plants without suffering from a lack of space. The positioning of the plants also forces the plants to keep paperwork confined to desk space, making the office look clean and tidy at all times. Furthermore the staff are much happier in the new office, making them more productive in their respective roles.

Hotel Indigo

County Contractors were working on this important hotel project as part of IHGs continual investment and expansion of the Hotel Indigo brand. The usual constraints of working in an urban area applied, with this terraced building being not far from Earls Court.

What we did

We followed the architect’s solution to mount planters onto the front railings of the hotel, enabling plant displays on otherwise unused space. We also sourced bespoke planters to fit on small ledges, helping to maximize the amount of foliage on display at the front of the hotel and help set it apart from its neighbours.

Results

The project opened on time, with the plants in full health and looking great. The hotel projects a friendly and welcoming image throughout and makes its guests feel comfortable at first sight.

The plants continue to attract attention and impress as they stand the test of time.

Benefits

The hotel has been transformed from a fairly non-descript terraced building into a fully-branded and recognisable hotel with an image that guests will associate with the Hotel Indigo brand. The plants help create a truly welcoming image by softening the appearance of the Victorian terrace. The continued demand for hotels in London means the hotel enjoys good occupancy levels, high levels of repeat custom and contributes significantly in building the Hotel Indigo brand as an important part of the family for IHG.
